Connect West Project
Many of the existing main circuits in the Tyrone area are heavily congested. This project plans for constructing a new 275 kV circuit between Dromore and the new substation at Turleenan.
Project overview
With further increases in renewable energy by 2030, existing circuits in the west of Northern Ireland are at significant risk of overloading unless we reduce the output of the generators. This means that some available renewable generation is wasted. To ensure that we can use as much of this as possible, we have to upgrade the network in this area.
Our preferred option involves constructing a new 275 kV circuit between Dromore and the new substation at Turleenan, near Moy. This would enable the grid to carry the level of renewable generation predicted in the time ahead. This upgrade to the transmission system will future proof this part of the network for years to come. It will unlock the full potential of wind, solar and other green technologies. Simultaneously it will modernise and expand our grid infrastructure at an accelerated pace. This supports economic development in the west of the province.
Benefits of the project
- Remove constraints on the grid in the west of Northern Ireland
- Address future security of supply
- Improve the capacity and efficiency of the grid
- Supports the delivery of our climate change target of Net Zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050
Where are we now?
We are at part 1 of our 3 part process: Identifying the optimum solution and what area may be affected. At this stage, we assessed the viability, practicality and cost of the proposed options. We will be engaging with local political and civic representatives in the time ahead to introduce what this projects entails and the benefits in will bring to the local economy across Tyrone.
Project updates
November 2024
We only plan for a new grid infrastructure projects where we believe it to be absolutely necessary, in line with our 3 part grid development process.
We are at part 1 of this process - Identifying the optimum solution and what area may be affected. During this part, we explore which technology will best resolve the specific need. In doing so, we will also learn more about the broad area where we are likely to locate new infrastructure.
We then narrow down our list of potential solutions based on several fact-based, objective criteria. We assess the viability of the technology, how practical it is to deliver, and how much it costs.
Your opinions and feedback are important to us. We always consider how new projects may impact individuals and communities, and we work hard to minimise this, where possible.
Have your say
Engaging with local communities is essential to our work. We always consult with residents, landowners and stakeholders in grid improvement works.
