Eden-Carnmoney Project
The Eden-Carnmoney project is a high-capacity transmission system upgrade. It is planned between Eden 110 kV substation (near Carrickfergus) and Carnmoney 110 kV substation (Newtownabbey).
Project overview
The electricity infrastructure which supplies Carrickfergus and Newtownabbey is over 80 years old. To meet growing demand, we need to significantly upgrade it.
The Eden-Carnmoney project will include:
- New sections of underground cable from Eden substation to west of Carrickfergus
- Refurbishment of the existing 110 kV overhead line from west of Carrickfergus to Mossley
- New high-capacity underground cable from Mossley to Carnmoney substation
- De-energising and future removal of sections of the existing overhead line circuit in developed areas between Mossley and Carnmoney and from Eden to west of Carrickfergus
- A new transformer at Glengormley Main 110 kV substation
Benefits of the project
Secure supply
This project will build a more resilient and reliable grid, making sure that everyone has power when and where they need it.
Supporting growth
These improvements will support future investment and economic growth – aligning with the vision of the Belfast Region City Deal.
Clean energy
Northern Ireland has a goal to generate 80% of our electricity from renewable sources by 2030. We'll likely need at least another 1300 MW of electricity from clean sources to meet this target.
The Eden-Carnmoney project will help to add more renewable energy on to the network. It will also allow us to use more electricity for heating and transport.
Remove existing overhead lines
Some transmission towers have become effectively landlocked, as the local area has continued to develop. This makes them difficult to maintain and refurbish. By using underground cables near urban hubs such as Carrickfergus and Carnmoney, NIE Networks will be able to remove overground infrastructure in these areas.
Where are we now?
We have nearly completed part 2 of our 3 part process: Identifying where to build the project. We will formally consult on our finalised plans in 2025 before making a planning submission.
Project updates
June 2024
We have now completed our first round of public engagement. We will now review and consider feedback from all stakeholders as we work to finalise our plans.
