EirGrid

Armagh Project

We need to protect security of supply and prepare for future increases in electricity demand. This project is set deliver this by improving the grid in the Mid Armagh area.

Project overview

The Armagh project aims to improve the grid in the Mid Armagh area. We have already carried out studies to assess the best options.

Our preferred option is to build a second 110/33 kV substation at the existing Armagh Central substation. The new substation would be supplied by both:

  • A new overhead line from Tandragee
  • A new underground cable through Armagh City Centre to Armagh North substation

Benefits of the project

This project will bring benefits to both the Armagh area and Northern Ireland's overall grid by:

  • Improving grid strength, capacity and resilience
  • Allowing new connections to the grid, stimulating economic growth
  • Helping to meet increased domestic and industry demand

Where are we now?

We have completed the first stage of our 3 part process for developing the grid: identifying the best solution and affected areas. We are set to introduce the project to the local community in 2025.

Project updates

February 2024

We only plan for new grid infrastructure projects where we believe it to be absolutely necessary, in line with our 3 part grid development process.

We are currently at part 1 of this process: Identifying the optimum solution and what area may be affected. At this stage, we are engaging with key stakeholders and elected representatives.

During this part, we explore which technology will best resolve the specific need. In doing so, we will also learn more about the broad area where we are likely to locate new infrastructure.

Once SONI receive approval from the Utility Regulator, this project will move to part 2 of the process: Identifying where the project will be built.
